Samsara Designs / Myth Cafe

This project began with the question: how can we destigmatize grief? To create a space rooted in local culture that allows for open communication, genuine empathy and understanding surrounding loss it had to be light and warm, like the Philippine sun.

Taking advantage of the natural light to showcase the passage of time through the thoughtful play of light and shadows, the central space was designed to be both a focal point and multifunctional space that could also serve as future spaces for discourse. Materials commonly used were also carefully chosen and reshaped into familiar forms that are distinctly Filipino. Hammered capiz shells bring a contrast to the solidity of the dark shades of ipil wood, while the versatility of rattan and the softness of abaca help create depth and layer.

The Myth Cafe serves serves as a space that encourages and can touch on any Filipino’s sense of longing for loved one’s passing, yet extends to a present experience that is filled with hop and much joy, just as the sunsets we have in this archipelago carry us forward each and every day.
